 The Missouri 10

Puppy Mill Rescue

Schnauzer Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic successfully rescued 10 Miniature Schnauzers from a puppy mill in Collins, Missouri on November 21, 2009. This was the largest rescue and transport so far by Schnauzer Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic and it happened just before a major holiday.

The Schnauzers were among more than 180 dogs of numerous breeds facing death by the puppy mill owner who was being shut down or go to auction to other unscrupulous breeders. Puppy mill dogs spend their lives in crates their whole lives in horrible conditions with no heat in the winter and no air conditioning in the summer. The stench is horrible.

Upon learning of the Missouri puppy mill closure and enormous amount of Schnauzers in need, Schnauzer Rescue acted quickly making arrangements to secure and transport on commercial airlines ten (9 females and one male) of the Schnauzers, all of whom are approximately 2-3 years of age. One of our volunteers went to Missouri to help get them safely home. They arrived at Baltimore Washington airport with  10 volunteers to meet them to help get them on their new journey towards a new life. They were all very scared, very confused and very stinky!

They were housed over night in various foster homes, then they were all given a much needed grooming the next day and sent to foster homes where they would stay until they are adopted. In the days to come, arrangements were made for each one of them to receive medical care, spay/neuter appointments and have their teeth cleaned. It took a coordinated effort by all of our volunteers to transport all ten dogs where they needed to go.

It was discovered that three of the females were pregnant. Patience, Lizzie and Genie were all soon to be moms when they arrived in Schnauzer Rescue. 20 Puppies were born in loving foster homes that would have been born in a puppy mill. Those 20 puppies will soon need homes too.

These are the Missouri 10 who were up for adoption

They have all been vet checked and spayed or neutered and had their teeth cleaned (except for our three moms who will be spayed before they leave rescue). Many were treated for various parasites but all of them are doing well. All of them are much happier being able to be just someone's loving pet rather than producing puppies for the profit of a puppy mill.
